Weddings tend to be ‘all about the bride’ but we should not forget another very important person – the Mother of the Bride. Here is a great blog from the Emily Post Institute about how both moms should dress for the big day.
In addition to focusing on the bride and groom on their special day, the parents of the couple also receive a fair amount of attention. Just as the bride selects her wedding dress, both mothers should take their time to choose their outfits. Tradition and courtesy say that the mother of the bride gets first choice.
Co-ordination not Necessary but Communication is
The mother of the bride and the groom don’t have to coordinate outfits completely, but they should share what they have in mind. The bride can be very helpful by encouraging the moms to get in touch with each other. This is to avoid the rare but possible chance of “the moms” choosing the same dress. More likely is the possibility that the mothers may have different tastes and show up in dresses that are extremely different. Think one in a cocktail dress, while the other is in a formal gown. They don’t necessarily have to wear the same length dress, but many do. They think it creates a more cohesive look, especially for wedding photos. The most important thing is that the moms discuss things like style and colour, but ultimately each should choose something they like.
Mother of the Bride and Groom Dress tips
Long dresses and skirts are fine for any wedding from noon on. Ideally, the two moms wear different colours, so each has a distinct look. Variations on the wedding colour scheme are fine, but they should try not to wear the same colours as the bridesmaid’s dresses because they will blend into the wedding party.
Matronly is out- fashionable and age-appropriate is in. Comfort matters as well, so select outfits that feel good, fit well and look great! There are so many options available now that you should have no problem finding the perfect dress.
